For the second reader, maybe he thought the next step was getting engaged/married in their relationship, and then she says she wants to just live together for awhile. I still consider this a big step, but he might see it as you aren’t ready for that commitment of mariage and he was, and maybe he was a little taken back. I think you need to reassure him that if you do live together that engagement/marriage is the end goal.

Also, I would think that after four years you would know if someone is open to living together before marriage, but if it hadn’t been discussed previously maybe he isn’t open to it. Even in this day and age there are still a lot of people out there that want to live together only after they are married.

It’s important to not be ‘backup girl’ as a ‘just friend’. He may be keeping you around in case the main thing doesn’t work out.
